Algernon Cadwallader interview

26 12 2008

I found out about Algernon Cadwallader through the internet. I was reading a forumtopic about this band with a strange name that kind of sounded like American Football and Cap’n’Jazz. When I read those two names, I had to check it out. I clicked a link and the first song that started playing was Serial Killer Status. From the first notes I was hooked. This band with a strange name had something really special going on. They were so energetic and fun to listen too. I can’t explain the feeling I get when I listen to Algernon Cadwallader. I would say it’s a mix between sleeping in and waking up to a beautiful day, and eating the best pizza ever. I decided to ask Tank a couple of questions about his band, skateboarding and whatnot. Check it out.

Could you introduce yourself and Algernon Cadwallader?
Hey Bert I’m tank and I play drums for Algernon. Peter plays bass and sings. Joe plays a mean guitar.

The first thing most people notice is the “weird” name. What or who is Algernon Cadwallader?

Algernon S. Cadwallader was the first resident of Yardley, PA. We all grew up in or around yardley (bucks county).

A good bandname is important, aren’t you afraid that with a bandname like that you’re putting off people?
If people dont want to listen to us because of our name then thats ok with us.

So on to the music. Could you describe the way Algernon Cadwallader sounds?
We are tuned in such a way that the sound is happy. Like an old-fashioned marriage, it cannot be undone. Our songs are built out of a chaotic pack of chords and tones.

How ‘bout if your band were to have a taste. What flavor would it be?

LL Cool J.

You’ve been compared to bands such as Cap’N’Jazz and American Football. What do you think about that?
I think those bands are awesome and that’s cool.

Is that something you were aiming for? Or did you guys just start jamming and the Algernon-sound kind of created itself.
We all grew up listening to those bands but werent aiming for anything. the sound of Algernon is Algernons.

What would be an ideal situation for listening to Algernon Cadwallder?
Cooking a tasty meal, cleaning your house, fucking your friend.

For the full-length, Some Kind Of Cadwallader, you hooked up with Remi and Chupacabra records from France. Why is that?

Remi offered to throw in and do a Euro version of the LP which we were all stoked about.

The 12”-version of the record sold out in no time. What did you think about that?

Are you planning a reprint of the 12″ version?

You guys are working on a new 7”/EP. Could you tell us something more about that?
“Hot Green” will be pressed on both 7″ & CD. The cd will have a few extra cd only jams. This release will be packaged completely together (ie.. CD comes with 7″).

So I guess after that you’re hitting the road again. Your last tour didn’t go very well. Could you tell us why?
I broke my leg skateboaring at a skatepark in Tampa. I had to go home and get surgery. 10 screws and a plate installed in my leg. I’m seeing the doctor in 2 weeks to see if i can start weight bearing on my leg yet. Skate or die. The 2 weeks we did get to tour were amazing!!!

So you’ll just book the dates you had to cancel again and then continue?

Right now im just focused on recovering and being able to walk again. When recovery is complete we will do some touring.

Are there any plans to travel to Europe?
Yes we would love to travel to Europe!

Last question! How much do you love pizza?

Many thanks go out to Tank, Peter and Joe in Algernon Cadwallader for answering these questions. I borrowed the pictures from their myspace. All rights owned by their owners. I hope they don’t mind!
